There are active keloids (growing) or inactive (stabilized), regardless of their age. Active keloids grow and cause pain, itching, numbness, and emotional distress. These keloids appear as a tense and red scar, often with a bluish tint.
An inactive keloid does not develop and is not bothersome from a subjective point of view, and is pinkish in color or close in color to normal skin. Keloids on the ears are most often formed after piercings. Keloids on the back of the neck, shoulders, back and chest are caused by acne inflammation and injury (Hypertrophic scars and keloids before and after treatment)
